Autumn for me means three things:
1) Pulling your leather jacket from the back of your wardrobe
2) The excuse to buy a new pair of boots (you can never have too many)
3) Fashion Week is back
And, thanks to the British Fashion Council, we were lucky enough to attend London Fashion Week. As ever, the Frows were full and the soundtracks were booming but the fashion took centre stage. We weren’t even put off by the torrential opening day . . .
But what did we learn from Fashion Week and what should we be filling our wardrobe with now? Here are our top trends:
1) Metallics add glamour to any occasion
You no longer have to wait for your annual Christmas party to rock metallics or worry that your look is more oven ready than on trend. Daks, Mulberry, Marc Jacob and Julien Macdonald were just a selection of designers who chose to shimmer this season.
2) Ruffles are back and bigger than ever
Is there anything more romantic than ruffles? We don’t think so, and it looks like Bora Aksu and Preen agree. For a more wearable look just remember that bigger doesn’t always mean better.
3) Velvet is no longer the go to fabric for curtains or 1980’s bridesmaid dresses
In fact, Victoria Beckham – our new Queen of Velvet – showed us how crushed should no longer just be a way of serving ice!
4) Blocks to heels!
Probably the most wearable trend from LFW – and exciting news all round – is that stilettos are out and block heels are in (cue simultaneous sigh of relief from women everywhere!) Stylish and comfortable, they should be a staple shoe to any fashionista’s wardrobe. Mix and match trends like Erdem and Toga or go for a classic court like Tibi.
5) Florals never go out of favour
Spring Summer collections wouldn’t be the same without florals but Paul Smith and Simone Rocha show us how to create modern looks that wouldn’t look out of place at a Summer Garden Party or over a Christmas mulled wine.
To help you ensure any pavement becomes your runway, we’ve picked a selection of our favourite high street pieces that recreate the trends we’ve seen at Fashion Week. You can try them all on your MeModel now and buy your favourite pieces directly.
